Home Lab Safety
This was a project I completed for Miacademy’s brand new Home Lab Safety modules - designed for students to be able to complete real-life, hands-on science experiments in a home setting.
This lesson was initially scripted as one long comic simply depicting correct safety behaviors. However, we decided to rework the format to be broken up into digestible, short individual comics. This allowed us to display both correct and incorrect behaviors, and ask synthesis questions of the students along the way.
Additionally, breaking this down into 6 comics allowed me to depict several different types of student scientists and family situations. Since I do not see or personally know the students who will be using my materials, it’s important to me to show the variety of families who may be interacting with my work. This also helps naturally expose students to those who may look or exist differently than they do.
This comic was completed digitally with Clip Studio Paint. I scripted, color keyed, and provided art direction, while my collaborator at Miacademy provided script edits and formatting. We went through about 3 stages of edits - first the script and copyedits, followed by a sketch stage that required a few edits for clarity, and a final stage for detail edits.
